As Spoleto ages, so too do its organizers and luminaries, like Joseph Flummerfelt. Thursday night’s party was a grand send-off to the man who spent more than 30 years as Spoleto’s Director of Choral Activities.
Not even the flood of the year could stop rockabilly fans from showing up for Friday night’s One Man Show/Rebelettes get-together at the Tin Roof. A few hours before the show, all roads leading downtown had been shut down by the po-po. The tenacious few who made it out were rewarded with a crazy night of beer, babes, and rockabilly. One-man band Mosquito Bandito opened the show with a cymbal crashing, psycho-stomping set of songs. All the tunes tended to sound the same, but he didn’t lack for energy. The real star of the night was Rosie Hellfire from local burlesque troupe, The Red Hot Rebelettes. Performing to a rockabilly soundtrack, she did three rounds of saucy striptease that was more PG-13 than porn. She proved that you don’t have to get nekkid to put on a sexy show. Keep an eye out for the next Rebelette show with the whole troupe — you won’t be disappointed. Local surfabilly band Jason and the Juggernauts took the stage for the rest of the night and cranked out a solid set of Dick Dale-inspired tunes that seemed perfect for the day’s flood freakout.
