Rooting Down Farms, run by Rita Bachmann and Harleston Towles, is a small-scale organic fruit and vegetable operation located at the Dirt Works Incubator Farm on Johns Island. Their latest effort seeks to infuse your own yard and family life with a passion for farming and nutritious food. The two focus on growing fairly traditional crops such as onions, heirloom potatoes, carrots, beets, bell peppers, and okra. This fall root crops will be plentiful including orange, white, and purple sweet potatoes, sweet miniature turnips, and tender greens such as chard and spinach. The duo’s home base is the Johns Island farmers market where shoppers can pick up fall bouquets of zinnias. Look for their fresh selections at area restaurants and various wholesale outlets throughout town.
