Southern dandies and sandy-haired surfers gathered at Billy Reid Saturday night for a party hosted by Rogue Wave Surf Shop. The event was an official preview of new, handcrafted surfboards from California-based Gato Heroi, which is represented locally by Rogue Wave owner Rhett Boyd. Dressed in a plaid blazer with a bow tie, Boyd said the event was a great opportunity to bring a new crowd into Billy Reid.
Shiny new boards were displayed in the front of the store, where acoustic guitarist/singer Ryan Bailey played soul-searchin’ songs. Toward the back, guests drank bourbon or PBR and congregated around food from Roti Rolls made from produce straight from the farmers market. If party-goers didn’t walk away with a surfboard or a Billy Reid gingham shirt, they at least left with a good buzz and a free Rogue Wave bumper sticker reading, “I <3 Small Waves.”
