If we had to pick one legendary restaurant in downtown Charleston, it would be Robert's. The small dining room has witnessed countless birthdays, engagements, and anniversaries over its 30-year history, surely making it the original special occasion place. Owner Robert Dickson still packs them in for live showtunes and arias, while his daughter MariElena and her husband Joseph Raya run the rest of the show. MariElena is a master at the stove, putting out a stellar five-course tasting menu, and Joseph specializes in emerging wine regions. But you'd better get by soon, before the show ends forever. Robert will be retiring and the restaurant closing up this spring, with MariElena and Joseph striking out on their own. We hate to see the old place go, but it will be exciting to see what emerges from this storied family of restaurateurs.—Jeff Allen, Dish (Winter 2010)
