Back in 2006, Rita Bachmann returned from farming internships in California and New York just in time to help start an organic farming revolution in Charleston. Her latest effort seeks to infuse your own yard and family life with a passion for farming and nutritious food. The farms or gardens, which range from 4’ x 4’ to a half acre, are cropping up in the yards of our neighborhoods. Rita’s Roots Backyard Harvest provides consultation, design, installation, maintenance, and education for Lowcountry residents on growing food and edible landscapes organically just outside their door. Programs are designed to nurture the gardeners in all aspects of growing their own food until they become independent food producers. Gardens can also be maintained by RRBH with produce harvested for the homeowner/restaurant on a weekly basis during the harvest time. The Garden Guidance program employs organic farming and gardening methods, utilizes biodynamic plants, permaculture principles, season extension, perennial food plants, and cover crops, and places heavy emphasis on mulching and composting to create microbe-rich soils, which in turn grow healthy plants. You may also contact RRBH for your fall garden transplants. Rita knows that “food unites people” and “gardening and touching the Earth creates healing, focus, and calm.” If you long to deepen your relationships with your family around the table or just get outside in your yard more, her contagious passion and knowledge is a great place to receive inspiration and maximize nutrition on your dinner plate.
