Master of the double bass. The virtuosic, France-based Renaud Garcia-Fons is a master musician with no musical borders. Plucking, bowing, and manipulating his custom-made five-string double bass, he'll perform a series of solo shows during the Wells Fargo Jazz Series.
Legato, pizzicato. Garcia-Fons made his Charleston debut in 2005 when he performed at the Cistern with the Entremundo Trio. During the opening number, he shocked the audience with an impressive bass solo, which showcased his legato and pizzicato techniques.
It's not all about technical flair. Garcia-Fons has amazing chops, but he's inspired by all sorts of music — blues, flamenco, Indian, classical, jazz — and the eclectic flavors come through in his expressive improvisation and compositions. Garcia-Fons' new album, Solo: The Marcevol Concert, a live album and DVD recorded in France at a church in le prieuré de Marcevol, demonstrates his intense and emotive solo style quite well.
