The only thing more American than bald eagles and freedom is the music of Johnny Cash. The Village Repertory Company’s production of Red, White, and Cash celebrates the life of the American songwriter who raised the spirits of his countrymen and left a legacy with his tunes. The family-friendly musical will run the two weekends following Independence Day. “We’ve presented this show for Fourth of July the last three years and it has been a huge success,” says Keely Enright, producing artistic director of the Village Rep. “We couldn’t wait to bring it back again this year. This is not a play but a musical celebration incorporating the biggest hits of Johnny’s career with some of the patriotic tunes that Johnny sang and recorded in his lifetime as well.” For Red, White, and Cash, everyone is on stage jamming and foot-stomping the whole show to famous hits, including patriotic covers like “This Land is Your Land,” “Sea to Shining Sea,” and “America the Beautiful.” “Johnny Cash is considered a ‘true American’ not only for the time he served in America’s Armed Forces in the Air Force, but for the people he represented in song — the underdogs, the disheartened, and those at the end of their rope,” says Enright.
