Recycling art winners announced

‘Nearsighted Sea Turtle Gorges Himself on Bagfish’ takes first place

Charleston County's Environmental Management Department announced the winners of its 14th annual Creative Recycling Art Contest today. Sam Ogden won the adult category with "Nearsighted Sea Turtle Gorges Himself on Bagfish," and Hannah Holloway won the student category with "Out My Old Window." Both received $300 gift cards.

In celebration of America Recycles Day, the county asked entrants to submit artworks made of 70 percent recyclable or discarded materials. There were 35 entries in all. Austin Abt came in second place in the adult category with "Bulb Child," made from scrap metal, discarded wire, electrical parts, and machine parts. Second place in the student category went to Kashe Hamlin's "For the Love of Kicks," made from cardboard, a plastic basket, aluminum and metal cans, fabric, recycled paper, hot glue, and acrylic paint.

The Charleston County Main Library will host a reception for all the entrants tonight at 6 p.m., and the art will stay on display in the library until Nov. 30.
