After nearly a decade, legendary New York-based hip-hop artist Rakim is back with a third solo album. Don’t let the hiatus throw you off; when it comes to rap, the guy’s got tenure. The Seventh Seal is out later this month on Rakim’s own label, Ra Records. As half of the duo Eric B. & Rakim, 1987 brought us Paid in Full. Still regarded as ground-breaking, the album set the stage for Ra’s reign. Since then his career has been one of innovation through alliteration. Armed with woven words, Rakim delivers his rhymes over soul-based beats wielding only the mic. Also known as the Microphone Fiend and The God MC, Rakim will reveal music from the new album at the Music Farm on Wednesday. As for its biblical reference, he calls the album his own Book of Revelation, saying, “When you look at hip-hop, I want to do that: spit fire and take our best from the ashes to build our kingdom.” Chicago-based rapper Rhymefest, also known as Che Smith, has collaborated with big names like his childhood friend Kanye West, Queen Latifah, and Lil Jon. Known for his politically charged rhymes, his debut album El Che is set to drop in early 2010. —Brian Sewell
