Obviously the best way to handle a blistering hangover is to jump into water so cold that Jack and Rose would have a fight to the death over who got to hang onto that damn door (we still think there was enough room for both of them). But in Charleston this can only mean one thing: It’s Polar Bear Plunge time. And you’ve got two places to take a dive, Folly Beach or Sullivan’s. One is Bill Murray themed (Folly), and the other one benefits the Special Olympics (Sullivan’s). Actually, you could conceivably make both, if you’re a sadomasochist. At Folly, costume judging starts at 12 p.m, and there’s a plethora of categories — OK, four — best guy Bill Murray, best girl Murray, best overall, and best group. Members of the Folly Beach Association of Business chose Bill Murray because, “What other guy is as oddly unique as Folly and as zany as people who jump into the frigid Atlantic Ocean on New Year’s Day just for the hell of it?” No word on prizes yet, but keep your ears peeled. The plunge is at 1 p.m. which gives you 30 minutes to drive and let your body recuperate before the one on Sullivan’s marches out from Dunleavy’s to the beach (that’s at 1:30 p.m., if you’ve got hangover brain). Paula Byers, who organizes the Sullivan’s Island plunge says, “We just want people to come out and have fun. They don’t need to bring a donation, but we really want to encourage those who want to donate to give.” Both are free to participate in, but you can buy T-shirts as well as towels at both of them.
