Charleston is awash in gourmet burger joints these days, but Poe’s Tavern on Sullivan’s Island was a Lowcountry pioneer of big, sloppy, house-ground cheeseburgers. By day, it’s a bustling beach lunch spot, by night a raucous bar and grill. Edgar Allan Poe posters and memorabilia line the rustic walls, and all the burgers are named after his tales, from the basic Gold Bug with a mundane slice of cheese to the fearsome Tell-Tale Heart with fried egg, bacon, and cheddar cheese. The fries are hand-cut, and there’s plenty of good beers on tap, too. Poe’s fish tacos are rumored to be pretty good, but with those big, beefy burgers demanding attention, I’m not sure how anyone would find that out. —Robert Moss Dish (Winter 2013)
