Drama nerds and cheapskates alike should jump at this chance to see several short plays over two nights for just $5 a pop. Hosted by South of Broadway Theater Company, the PlayFest gives local playwrights the chance to present their work to the public for the first time in staged readings. “All of these writers have been supported through [South of Broadway’s] playwriting workshops,” says Kristen Kos, assistant producer at South of Broadway. PlayFest started five years ago, and the North Charleston theater community has really embraced it, Kos says. “It really has become about building our own community. Of course we love the talent we get from outside Charleston, but we love our local talent and local theater companies too.” The plays run the gamut from absurdist comedy to dramas. Each evening will run about an hour and a half, with five plays the first night and four the second. On Saturday, audience members are invited to stay for the closing reception, which will feature complimentary drinks and hors d’oeuvres. PlayFest is part of the North Charleston Arts Festival.
