"Village" by Luis Bisschops (LJ Photography, Inc.)

The judges thought Luis Bisschops could have simply driven past this stream and gone on with his life. But he didn't. He realized that the location had great color and a tremendous texture to it. They appreciated that he took time to capture a picturesque postcard setting of a place so beautiful, and so run-down, making judges notice the beauty in an otherwise unremarkable place.

"View Through the Gate" by Angela Petitto

This picture was taken from a room with a view in the Museum of the City of Paris. Angela Petitto was in the Eiffel Tower city last fall visiting friends and admiring inspirational, flowery decorative paintings at a museum not always visited by tourists when she looked out a window over a balcony and saw a moment she wanted to remember always. Judges thought this amateur photographer's angle, placement of elements, and the flare of the sun in the photograph contributed to this picture's overall success.

"Untitled" by Eva Simone Capozzola

It was a windy day when a good friend posed for Eva Simone Capozzola's camera on top of the parking garage by the aquarium. This College of Charleston student from Long Island, N.Y., had an anthropology assignment to imitate the work of her favorite photographer. She chose Czech photographer Josef Koudelka, whom she says depicts reality not as it is but how it's imagined. Judges found this unique photograph carried serious, moody, abstract feelings with it. They had no idea what they were looking at, but they liked it.

"Untitled" by Shanna McGarry

Shanna McGarry usually parks at Station 25 on Sullivan's Island when she goes to the beach and walks at least a half-mile toward the Isle of Palms. She documents her foot travels and says she's been going through two or three rolls of film a month for the past four years, filling her walls with hundreds of beach pictures. This is the first photography contest she's entered, and judges liked the composition and perspective of such a common beach scene.
