Who’s up for some holiday roundball? The 19th running of the Roundball Classic not only boasts some of the top national talent in high school boys basketball, but it also benefits two great area causes. Communities in Schools, a nonprofit dropout prevention organization focused on keeping kids in school, and the North Charleston Rotary Club, which awards college scholarships to local high school students annually, will both receive proceeds from the event. The tournament tips off on Dec. 27 with three games followed by five games the next day, and eight on the 29th and 30th to wrap things up. With 16 total teams from both in and out of state, tournament director Tom McTighe promises a spirited atmosphere throughout the four-day event, pointing out Don Bosco Preparatory School (N.J.), Gonzaga College High School (Washington, D.C.), Wando High School (S.C.), and Pinewood Preparatory School (S.C.) as several perennial powerhouses. Behind the great high school competition in the Lowcountry, though, lies a deeper meaning, according to McTighe. “You’ll come out and you’ll see some great basketball, but you’re helping a great cause,” he says. “It’s a vehicle by which we can help the local community.”
