If you ask us, there are few more romantic figures in literature than the sheltered Brontë sisters. It seems that the great Russian playwright, Anton Chekhov, felt that way too — scholars think his famous play Three Sisters might have been based on what he read of the three English authoresses and their bleak, short lives. In an interesting creative turn, award-winning playwright Arlene Hutton has taken Three Sisters and loosely adapted it, with the Brontës as stand-ins for the Chekhov characters. PURE’s Sharon Graci found the play, which is still a work-in-progress, last year and decided to put on a workshop production. “It’s more than a staged reading, but less than a full production,” she says. “It’s fully staged, but we’ve stepped back so there’s only, say, one costume per character rather than three, things like that.” In other words, you probably won’t notice much difference between Parhelia and one of PURE’s regular productions. Workshopping can be a huge help to playwrights, as it’s often the first time they see their creation performed. “This can help set some expectations,” Graci says. “We’re able to put the resources of the full company at the disposal of the playwright.” In this case, the process is benefiting PURE as well, as they’re revisiting their approach to the new play development process.
