Fat Boys, thin crust, and more

About a month ago, the old Gilroy's on James Island underwent a transformation and emerged as Paisano's Pizza Grill, owned and operated by close friends Mark Slater and Nick Skover. Slater got the in on the spot after working for the previous owner.

"My old boss wanted to sell the place and focus on the Gilroy's downtown," Slater said. "So my buddy and I moved in and started making our own pizza." Slater and Skover did major renovations to the restaurant, putting in an outdoor patio, switching up the decor, and creating their own sauces. The pair even began growing their own herbs out front, adding homegrown basil, rosemary and parsley to their food.

Paisano's boasts their Fat Boys, a square deep dish pizza full of marinara, cheese, basil, and any two toppings. If you aren't ready to stuff down a square one, they offer regular and specialty pizzas with three crusts to choose from (regular, thin, Fat Boy), seven cheeses (Buffalo mozzarella, mozzarella, cheddar, blue cheese crumble, ricotta, feta, and provolone) and a variety of toppings, including gourmet toppings. Other menu items include hot and cold sandwiches, salads, and calzones. Stop in on a Tuesday and you can walk out with a calzone for only $5. Paisano's is open late, 12 a.m. Sun-Thurs. and 3 a.m. on Fri. and Sat. They'll even deliver too, but keep it to James Island unless its a big order, in which case they might venture out to Folly or West Ash.
