Charleston has its fair share of galleries and underground art events, but Angel Powell and Colleen Deihl still saw a hole in the scene. The former fine art gallery directors worried that there were still some artists that were being overlooked. “There are many artists that want to be in art shows, and we can give them the chance to show and sell their work, as well as possibly get the attention of a gallery owner or director,” says Deihl. In order to lend a hand to those artists, they founded Scoop. The group’s first event will feature works from a few under-recognized artists including Beaufort native Bill Mead, who specializes in “surrealist fruit landscapes”; IOP native Jesse Mead, who started out drawing comic strips and now finds the greatest inspiration in the female form; New York transplant Greer Farrell, who’s bringing along a 10-piece interactive painting; and Janelle Riolo, who “puts energy and movement into every brush stroke of her paintings.” The event will be catered by Guerrilla Cuisine and Sweetwater Brewing. —Erica Jackson
