We all know the Great Depression sucked — hey, some of us are living through it again right now. And if professionals couldn’t get a job back then, what about the actors? Let’s just say no one was emptying their pockets for theater tickets. As it did for the average working man, the Works Progress Administration came to the rescue for thousands of actors, sending them across the country to stage plays. Neal Bell’s On the Bum, or The Next Train Through, hosted by the College of Charleston’s Theatre department, tells the story of one of those actors, following her journey from Broadway to Bumfork (a.k.a nowhere). Known for its excellent writing and witty period style, Bell’s play will have you talking like his girl Friday by the time the curtain falls.
