The Old Village Post House is the Mt. Pleasant outpost of downtown’s Maverick restaurant group, the team behind High Cotton and Slightly North of Broad. Housed in a restored 19-century general store on charming Pitt Street in the Old Village, the dining room has white beadboard walls and dark pine floors, and it’s elegant and cozy at the same time. The tavern room, with its brown leather chairs, is a comfortable spot for casual cocktails. Executive Chef Frank Lee and Chef Forrest Parker have created a menu that applies a European sensibility to fresh Southern ingredients. A cast iron pan-roasted duck breast is served with butternut squash farro and a muscadine gastrique, while the roasted grouper is served over a creamy Carolina Gold risotto. There are always interesting combinations on the vegetable plate (field pea and peanut ragout!), and superior versions of Lowcountry favorites like shrimp and grits round out impressive food offerings served in a relaxed, elegant setting. —Robert Moss Dish (Summer 2014)
