Oicho Kabu, Yukon, and Polka Dot Dot Dot

When: Sat., Jan. 10, 8 p.m. 2009
Price: $8, $5/students
You can always count on Redux Contemporary Art Center to book cutting-edge entertainment. On Saturday, they host a trio of bands you won’t find at your typical watering hole. Local band Oicho Kabu kicks things off with a set featuring multilingual vocals, guitars, drums, winds, and strings. The sextet includes Jason Brogan (in his final performance with the band), Sarah Catoe, Kim Larson, Chad Pirtle, Sean Robinson, and Mustafa Walker. (See “Oicho Kabu has played all around town — living rooms, Cumberland’s, Redux, the Black Cart — and has done two East Coast and midwest tours,” Brogan says. Next up, Baltimore’s Yukon is Nick Podgurski (who also plays in New York-based band Extra Life), Sam Garrett, and Brad Smith. They played at Redux back in September as part of the New Directions in Rock Music Series. The Baltimore City Paper says the band “chisel(s) angular math rock into a softer, more curvaceous body of prog.” (See Polka Dot Dot, the headlining “trio of travelling minstrels,” hails from Olympia, Wash. Band members Jordan O’Jordan (Jordan Smith), Onyx of Olympia, and Miss Spindleheart (Colleen Johnson) started playing together in Auckland, New Zealand in 2007. According to the press release, “their blend of banjo/harp/ukulele/guitar/clapgame music draws heavily from American folk, but finds inspiration in everything from medieval rounds to ghost-lover ballads.” (See —Erica Jackson
