New barbecue food truck in West Ashley

Say hello to Hello My Name Is... BBQ

A new food truck popped up in West Ashley this week, and we stopped by to sample some of its fare for lunch on Wednesday.

Hello My Name Is.... BBQ is run by husband-and-wife team Ryner and W.S. Cody Burg. After getting approved by the city and county, and with permission from the property owners, they've parked their tasty ride in the parking lot of Lowcountry Scooter (844 Savannah Hwy.), where they plan to be slinging 'cue weekdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Cody says they purchased the truck from Pollo Tropical in North Charleston, and he repainted it himself — in the beastly summer heat.

The menu is short and sweet with a choice of two sandwiches, the beer-braised pork ($4.50) or the sweet barbecue bacon with slaw and tomatoes ($5.25). They come served on Normandy Farm brioche, a thicker piece of bread than your typical soft barbecue bun, which means you'll want to slather some sauce on it to keep it from being too dry. And you can add slaw, jalapeños, or tomato to your pork sandwich for .50 cents each. Highly recommend going with the hot peppers.

They've got some vegetarian options too with a barbecue tofu bacon sandwich and lima beans and rice. And don't order the barbecue hash expecting the soupy whole hog version. This is more like chopped meat mixed in with some black-eyed peas and rice.

Their homemade pickles are crunchy and vinegary and come with every sandwich. You can buy them by the jar for $4 too. A picnic table has been set up next to the truck for those who want to sit down and eat, but we took ours back to the office so we could chow down in the a/c.

Cody says they're looking for a spot downtown, but it's difficult because it has to be a private property. The City's regulations prevent food trucks from just rolling up anywhere and selling their fare. (Boo on you, City.)

Drive on over to Avondale and check it out. Oh, and vote for them as your favorite food truck so they can win $10,000 from the Food Network, which is holding a contest in conjunction with their Tyler Florence-hosted TV show, the Great Food Truck Race. Text FT180 to 66789 or vote here.
