Power of the bone. Columbia-based trombonist and bandleader Mitch Butler, known best for his work with the bands Nebulous Jazztet and JazzBonez, will lead Modus Bone through a set of funk, fusion, be-bop-style originals, and cheerful standards. A native of Raleigh, N.C., Butler earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in music performance from East Carolina University. His horn is the dominant voice throughout the band's set.
Tight-knit combo. Butler fronts a solid and versatile foursome of musicians, including sax player Chris Andrews, keyboardist Nick Brewer, bassist Reggie Sullivan, and drummer Jeremy Roberson. They perform with a sense of independence and freedom, and they educate, too, conducting clinics, seminars, and educational concerts year-round. The combo's tight and deliberate style will sound awesome in the theater setting of the Hippodrome.
An expansive repertoire. Butler says the goal of the group is "to convey the music of many styles through the jazz idiom — from Duke Ellington to Stevie Wonder and beyond."
