American pop/rock legends the Beach Boys entertained a full-capacity crowd at the new Mt. Pleasant Hospital. After opening sets from local bands the Blue Dogs and On the Hunt, the Beach Boys — led by singers/keyboardists Mike Love and Bruce Johnston — hit the big stage in front of nearly 9,000 fans for a lengthy set of classics. The concert was part of the Grand Opening celebration at the new East Cooper facility.

Local musician and photographer J.R. Getches was on the scene, snapping pics of the Beach Boys from side stage. "The performance was outstanding," he told City Paper. "They still sing their asses off. They did a great job of getting the crowd involved — real pros. Drummer John Cowsill sang "Help Me Rhonda" and the crowd took it right up. The sound was crystal clear and warm. The volume was perfect, as you can tell by the crowd of mixed ages just in front of the main speakers. The Roper St. Francis staff was impressive, too. It was scary how smoothly everything ran and how serene everyone was."
