A multi-instrumentalist with a ton of training and experience in percussion (especially vibraphone), Michael Hanf is the type of player who can get a great sound out of almost any instrument. A CofC grad, Hanf moved from Charleston to New York City in 2010 and has since collaborated with a variety of experimental groups, including Manzana Carnal and Panoply. This year, he caught the songwriting bug. “Vibraphone is still my main thing, but I’ve become much more interested in songwriting since the years I’ve been away from Charleston,” he says. “I’m trying to make this a ‘re-introduction’ into the Charleston scene because of the album Lindsay Holler and I are working on.” Hanf and Holler (his old bandmate from the Dirty Kids) will share vocal and guitar duties on the new record. “I’m looking at it as more of a vibraphone-and-guitar-centric folk project,” Hanf says. “Vibraphone isn’t used much in popular music, especially folk, but working together in the Dirty Kids was a big eye-opener for me in terms of how vibraphone can be used in less traditional mediums. Arranging for just vibraphone, guitar, and voice is difficult. There’s really no history to draw from, so it’s a big experiment.” Hanf’s backing band at this week’s show features Holler on vocals, alongside many of Hanf’s old cohorts, including bassist Ben Wells, drummer Stuart White, and guitarist Lee Barbour.
