Metal Mondays return to Wet Willie's

The house band rocks East Bay Street and the Market every week

After a brief hiatus over the fall and winter, Metal Mondays are back on the schedule at Market-area venue Wet Willie's (209 East Bay St.). The weekly live-band, heavy metal-themed karaoke nights feature a solid house band comprised of guitarist/keyboardist and ringleader Josh Kaler, drummer Jack Burg, and bassist Jonathan Gray. Various guest players are expected to join in over the winter and spring.

"It's the much anticipated return of your favorite Monday night-live-band-metal-infused-karaoke in the entire city of Charleston," says Gray. "Come out and drink alcohol-sodden slushies and sing your favorite guilty pleasures from the highest point of Western cultures' musical offerings."

Things can get pretty slamming during these gigs. The band, formerly known as "Haireoke," the band originally formed in 2004 with four local musicians and a rotation of guest players. Guitarist/singer Ward Williams, bassist Jonathan Gray, drummer Evan Bivins (all formerly of Jump, Little Children), and guitarist Kenny Harris (of The Films) kicked things off at the old Johnny Ola's (now where Voodoo Tiki Bar resides). Through the years, Kaler (of Slow Runner) and Chris McLernon (of Iron Cherry, Weird Science, and L.A. band Saigon Kick) stepped in as additional lead guitarists. The band regularly pumped out flawless renditions of '70s and '80s hard-rock and metal classics.

The current set list is even bigger than before, with new classics and a pile of additional nü-rock and modern metal tunes — like Metallica's "For Whom the Bell Tolls," Alice in Chains' "Man in the Box," and The Darkness' "I Believe in a Thing Called Love." Kaler says it's not all just dude-rock and metal, though. "We do Joan Jett, Blondie, Ramones, Journey, and Pat Benatar as well. "

Wanna-be rock singers out of the audience can sign-up starting in the main room at 9 p.m. For more info, check out wetwillies.com and twitter.com/metalmonday666.
