After PETA went all hardcore on the peaceful monks of Mepkin Abbey a few years back and "busted" them for their rather conventional chicken farming methods, the monks abandoned their egg operation and started growing mushrooms, a decidedly non-controversial product. Today, their oyster mushrooms can be found in a variety of creative permutations on menus around town, and home cooks can pick up a container at Piggly Wiggly grocery stores and Newton Farms. When we last spoke to the monks, they were still in the process of experimenting with their shiitake mushrooms. —Stephanie Barna
