Specializing in a sophisticated tangle of jazzy phrases, funk rhythms, and harmonic mischief, New York-based instrumental trio Medeski, Martin, and Wood offer much more than a few cool jams. Since forming in 1991, drummer Billy Martin, keyboardist John Medeski, and bassist Chris Wood have dabbled in hip-hop and experimental subgenres along the way. Their latest album, MSMW Live: In Case the World Changes its Mind (Indirecto), is a double live album featuring acclaimed jazz guitarist John Scofield. The tracks were culled from their lengthy collaborative tours in 2006. The music veers from atmospheric and trippy to full-steam hard-funk grooves a la the Meters. It sounds like all four colleagues are having a blast as they play off of each other on stage. It’s been six years since MM&W have performed in town, and they’re making the most of their visit with a pre-show masterclass at Tivoli Studios (656 King St.) scheduled for 5:30-7:30 p.m. (admission is $20).
