The men's magazine Maxim has begun its Great American Bar Search, and after looking for quality watering holes in New York City, Austin, and Dallas, the magazine found itself touring Charleston for a day. Slim on details, the publication chronicles a day bouncing around the Holy City looking for the best places to get a drink in Charleston.
After a few innings, Maxim crossed a couple bridges and found itself on the porch of Poe’s Tavern. The Sullivan’s Island staple impressed with its Edgar Allan Poe themed burgers and cheap beer deals. For a bit more debauchery, they returned downtown and made a wide-eyed stop in the Market Street Saloon, where shot girls shaking it in short shorts commanded their attention.
The extensive tequila menu at Voodoo Tiki Bar and Lounge was enough to lure Maxim out to West Ashley, and the bar’s eclectic menu helped them sober up enough to make it to the Silver Dollar, where the magazine was able to put up with the young college crowd long enough to take advantage of the $1 bourbon deals. The tour finished at Big John’s Tavern. The dive bar for sports fans was a great end point, as it attracts “serious drinkers” with no further ambitions for the rest of the evening.
Although the article gives little in way of critical review, it is fun to look at the Charleston bar scene through the eyes of an outsider. We bet you didn't even know Maxim did any writing.
