At first glance, Mama Q's menu seems scattered. The Johns Island restaurant, which opened Nov. 2, offers a variety of dishes, including barbecue, chicken salad, and tamales.
But owner Kim Quintero clarifies: these aren't substandard takes on the dishes; these are family recipes Quintero's had for years. "I want everything I make to be from the heart and soul. I learned the Ridgerunner barbecue recipe growing up in Arkansas, while the tamale recipe comes from the Mexican side of my family."
Mama Q's prepares most of the food from scratch. The menu also has an all-American burger (lettuce, tomato, mayo), a variety of sandwiches served on Texas toast, and chicken wings.
The restaurant also makes a homemade sangria, plus in-house sauces and blends: chile gravy, spicy cheese sauce, and Quintero's homemade rub.
As of now the restaurant is open until 9 p.m., though Quintero hopes to increase hours with increased business. It doesn't stay open as late as the bars, but the spot offers live music at 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Fridays.
The resturant's hours are Tues.-Thurs: 11:30-8 p.m.; Fri: 11:30-9 p.m., and Sat: 12-9 p.m.
