Magnolias offers just what visitors want when they come to Charleston: indulgent, quality Southern cuisine. But that doesn’t mean locals don’t enjoy it, too. Executive Chef Don Drake’s menu is diverse, boasting everything from sweet chili-rubbed ahi tuna with habañero hummus and pepper jack spring rolls to classic buttermilk fried chicken breast with cracked pepper biscuits and sausage-herb gravy. It’s all about layering classic Southern flavors in innovative ways — be sure to try the fried green tomato appetizer with white cheddar and caramelized onion grits, country ham, and tomato chutney. It’s big enough to be an entrée and sweet enough to be a dessert. For a more wallet-friendly option, stop by Magnolias for lunch when they offer plenty of Southern-styled soups, salads, and sandwiches for around $10. —Erica Jackson Curran Dish (Winter 2013)
