Lowcountry Highrollers seeking skaters for next season

Check out the 'hurtshops' to prepare for tryouts

Getting inspired by Ellen Page in Whip It? Brush off your roller skates, because the Lowcountry Highrollers are holding tryouts at Hot Wheels for females ages 18 and up to join their team.

For those who think they aren’t tough enough to roll with the derby gals, the team will be holding Lo-Co "hurtshops" (think potentially painful workshops) to teach you the necessary skills, including fundamentals, advice, and critiques. They will be on Tues. Oct. 20 from 6-9 p.m. and Sat. Oct. 24 from 9-11 a.m. There will also be an open skate session on Thurs. Oct. 22 from 7-9 p.m. The Highrollers are looking for attitude as much as they are looking for skill, so bring it. Hurtshops and open skate sessions are not required for tryouts, but they are a good chance to practice before the big day.

Make sure to arrive early for tryouts on Saturday to complete paperwork. Bring a valid photo ID, $20 tryout fee, elbow and kneepads, wrist guards, mouth guard, and skates. If you don’t have your own pair, you can rent from Hot Wheels or purchase from Point Break or The Sportsman. For more information, contact Killie Dee at wendyboswell@hotmail.com or Major Threat at erica.edwina@gmail.com.
