After Israel and Danielle Paskowitz’s son, Isaiah, was diagnosed with autism, the couple tried to find a place where he could relax. After spending a day at the beach, the Paskowitzs realized that Isaiah was soothed by the ocean and surfing with his dad, and just like that the idea for Surfer’s Healing was hatched. Surfer’s Healing is a non-profit that aims to provide a calming recreational activity for children with autism. Trained surfers partner with the children and help them ride the waves. Surfer’s Healing has done events nationwide, but this weekend, they’re returning to Charleston, and Dangermuffin, Pick ‘N Roll, Post Cobra, Fowler’s Mustache, Dallas Baker and Friends, Dave Grunstra and Barrett Beeson, and members of the Dubplates are putting on a concert to help. Event organizer Steven Sandifer of Dangermuffin was inspired by the first time he watched Surfer’s Healing in action. “I walked up and down the beach, running into all sorts of new and old friends as I watched these extremely skilled surfers dropping into great waves with a child on the front of each board, hoisting them up, and surfing,” he says. “It all reminded me so much of the joy that I get from surfing and watching these kids experience something that has brought so much happiness into my life was just amazing.”
