LOCAL ACT: Skye Paige & The Original Recipe

A brand new recipe: Skye Paige gets in the swing

"Everyone I play with plays in other bands, so this is my basic recipe, but it can be made up from scratch sometimes," says singer/guitarist Skye Paige of her musical project, The Original Recipe. A single mom with an impressive rock 'n' roll resume that stretched from Atlanta to the Lowcountry over the last 15 years, Paige is unusually enthusiastic and focused — and eager to get things going with her new band.

The current lineup features Paige on vocals and electric and acoustic guitars alongside a trio of veteran Charleston players — John Krucke on bass, Tommy Thunderfoot on lead guitar, and Greg "The Motor" Levkus on drums. A rotation of special guests often includes guitarist George McDaniels (of Smokehouse), saxophonist Louis Dixson, and other local players. Every member has the chops and the musical knowledge to hang with any style or on-stage situation.

"I mix in my originals with my favorite covers," Paige says. "I don't play requests or Top-40 crap. I stay true to what I like, which is blues, rockabilly blues, or country blues [laughs]." The frontlady has been known to throw in cuts by Memphis Minnie, Elvis, Wanda Jackson, Lucinda Williams, Bonnie Raitt, Hank Williams, and others.

Paige relocated to Charleston from Atlanta in 2001. She gradually established herself in town as a straightforward guitarist and an enthusiastic singer with a sharp and soulful style. She played open mic nights and with various groups before forming her own casual, blues/rockabilly combo called The Sputniks in 2005.

"I have really grown as a guitar player since those days," she says. "Going to the Lowcountry Blues Club jams [at A Dough Re Mi] helped me come out of my shell and solo more. People are surprised that I can play. They also say my voice sounds way better when I play solo, 'cause I am not screaming over the band ... I'm still working on that one." —T. Ballard Lesemann
