How did a musical production of a 1960s B-movie become one of the most popular musicals of all time? What If? Productions is tackling this botanical musical nightmare with a production starring Brian Porter (otherwise known as City Paper’s 2010 “Best Drool-Worthy Thespian”) and Mary Fishburne. What If? has added a couple of original features to the show, including a dark twist to this already dark story, and a stage that extends into the audience. “It’s a musical comedy about a man-eating plant where a lot of people die. It’s got a really creepy edge to it, and we’ve had a great time keeping it balanced with the humor of the script,” says director Kyle Barnette. If you’d rather see a musical about a torturous dentist and a man-eating plant than a bunch of tragic idealists singing about the French Revolution, you’ll want to check this out.
