Kwadjo Campbell has a beef with lost tourism dollars

Leaving Money on the Table

My gripe is that Charleston has a significant opportunity to promote the African-American niche of the tourism industry, but it has let other cities in the South capitalize on this revenue producer. Savannah and Asheville have no business leading Charleston in anything when it comes to tourism promotion and development. We are a natural fit to attract African-American tourists. We have the Gullah Geechee culture, the historic sites, and the story. We have it all, but what we don't have is leadership. This leadership should come from Charleston Area Convention and Visitors Bureau or the Chamber of Commerce. The leadership could also come from the local economic development agencies or departments from local municipal or county governments. How about this as a novel idea? The leadership could come from African Americans elected or appointed to leadership positions. We are leaving money on the table. I am just saying.
