The Galactic Dog

The Galactic Dog

When Jack Hurley opened Jack's Cosmic Dogs, he wanted to recreate the experience of the old roadside hot dog stands he remembered from childhood car trips. With bright red and yellow walls, glass bottles of soda on ice, and an old-style soft-serve ice cream machine, Jack's captures the feel of a lost era. The second location on Folly Road replicates the vibe but features a much bigger dining room and a drive-thru ice cream window for orange and vanilla swirled soft-serve, and a third location in West Ashley opened last year. Jack's hot dogs are stellar and offer old-school toppings like chili and sauerkraut along with an array of more inventive combinations, like the Cosmic Dog (blue cheese slaw and sweet potato mustard) to the Sky Dog (blue cheese slaw, pickle, yellow mustard). Pair a chili-cheese Orbit City Dog with a side of Big Bang Fries (chili, cheese, spicy ranch, jalapeños, bacon) and a longneck Sundrop and you have a roadside classic. Or you can opt for the most amazing root beer float you'll ever have. —Robert Moss, Dish (Summer 2012)
