From his usual spot at stage-left, keyboardist and bandleader Ivan Neville leads his band Dumpstaphunk through some of the richest and most authentic New Orleans-style funk on the current jam-band scene. Seated at a sturdy Hammond B3 organ, Neville (the son of legendary vocalist Aaron Neville), stays cool and confident during performances, even when the rhythms get rowdy and the grooves heat up. Dumpstaphunk first came together in 2003. In 2007, they were voted “New Orleans’ Best Funk Band” by both
Offbeat Magazine and
Gambit Weekly. The current lineup features Nikki Glaspie on drums, Ian Neville (Ivan’s cousin) on guitar, and Nick Daniels and Tony Hall on bass guitars. Their latest album is the 10-song
Everybody Want Sum. Local combo Wadata opens at 9 p.m. Hungry Monks play acoustic Dead and more in El Bohio at 5 p.m.
