Baseball has the World Series, football has the Super Bowl, and Charleston brewers have the Iron Brew competition. The second annual competition will take place on Saturday with more than 50 teams competing to be crowned the “People’s Choice Winner.” And for good reason, since the winner gets their brew produced by Holy City Brewing and tapped at the local Mellow Mushroom joints in October. Iron Brew started as a collaboration between Holy City Brewing and Mellow Mushroom’s downtown location, which also originated the 100 Beer Club. “The Iron Brew Competition has been a fun way to be a part of a great community of home brewers.,” says Chris Brown, one of the owners of Holy City Brewing. Proceeds will be donated to the Gavalas-Kolanko Foundation, which provides college scholarships to students with physical disabilities. The admission fee grants beer lovers drink tickets for sampling and a vote for their favorite brewer. They’ve had three months to perfect a recipe for any style of beer using a combination of rosemary, lavender, coriander seed, and basil. Weigh Station will provide live music, and Mellow Mushroom will be serving up the pizza.
