Leader of the pack. Born in England, raised in Brooklyn, and now retired to Charleston, Ian Kay leads the nine-piece Charleston Jewish Jazz Ensemble (CharJJE for short). The show is part of Charleston Jewish Experience: Piccolo Spoleto at BSBI Synagogue.
Tradition, tradition. Using strings, horns, and more, the group will play Klezmer music and Yiddish swing standards. Hailing from Eastern Europe, Klezmer developed significantly around the turn of the 20th century among America's Ashkenazi communities. It's like the Yiddish equivalent of jazz or soul.
Spoof troupe. Jewish comedian Mickey Katz, famous for his musical parodies, plays a big role in this show. The CharJJE will perform some of his numbers.
