Hucks Lowcountry Table is an unexpected oasis of fine local dining amid the ice cream stands and frozen drink bars on the main Isle of Palms strip, and it has an ocean view from the tall windows of its casual but elegant dining room. Owner J. J. Kern and team turn out seasonal, local-centric dishes from a tiny kitchen: crab cakes over creamed Carolina Gold Rice, a Lowcountry bouillabaisse with mahi, shrimp, and oysters, and buttermilk fried chicken with sweet potatoes and collards. The four-cheese ravioli are splendid in a delicate smoked tomato sauce, and you can have a full sampling of local specialties in a single appetizer with a "stack" that layers crab cakes and fried green tomatoes with pimento cheese and chipotle cream in between. With fresh, local dishes and that ocean view, Hucks' table is one of the best on the islands. —Robert Moss, Dish (Summer 2012)
