Hoodoo Moon: Ninth Annual Membership Celebration
Fri., Nov. 8, 7-10 p.m. 2013
$30/membership and event entry, $15/student
They’ll put a spell on you. And by they we mean the art at the Halsey. To gain entry to the party you have to be a member of the Halsey, but membership isn’t too hefty a price — and it can get you some perks, like special members-only parties or behind-the-scene tours. Student membership is $15, and general membership starts at $30 and goes all the way up to the Sugar Dada level, which costs a cool $2,000. But an open bar party for $30 is pretty cheap these days, plus you can dance to live music from Minimum Wage and sip on drinks from Icebox and Sappo beer. Whole Foods is donating some yums, and the Halsey has a few tricks up its sleeve. “We’ll have the portrait booth that we have every year ... but Dr. O [ Dr. Ade Ofunniyin], an anthropologist and conjurer, will do readings,” membership and development coordinator Emily Rigsby says. Making it a double hoodoo kind of night is Renée Stout’s Tales of the Conjure Women exhibit, which features Stout’s alter ego Fatima Mayfield, a fortune teller and herbalist, and explores human relationships and social issues.
