The recent movement to go local is a pretty stellar idea, if you ask us. That’s why we’re glad to see that the Home Grown Gallery Show is making another appearance after a successful first run in January. This time, the artisans are taking the action to the City Gallery at Waterfront Park, and it’ll coincide with the end of the gallery’s Contemporary Charleston 2009: Revelation of Process exhibit.

Also coming down that day is Jonathan Brilliant’s giant installation constructed of 70,000 coffee stirrer sticks. You’ve got to admit that putting together so many tiny little bits to make one piece is pretty awesome, so you may want to catch it before it’s gone.

But while these exhibits are ending, the gallery show is just starting to explore the idea that we can all support local artists and get our fix of culture at the same time. Organizers describe it as a sort of farmer’s market, except without the mosquitoes, the humidity, or the farmers. We guess that would make it an artisan’s market, but the name just doesn’t have the same sort of ring to it.

The talent on hand includes hair accessory designer Anne Trabue Watson, jewelry designer Fernanda Sullivan, and graffiti artist Ishmael, among many others. Bring your checkbook or some cold hard cash if you plan to walk away with some unique pieces. Good for you, good for them — sounds like a win-win situation. —Moira Phillips
