Charleston Stage presents Helium, a humorous and emotional tale that explores the world of dementia, aging, and the power of the human spirit. Written and directed by Dock Street founder Julian Wiles, the play focuses on 80-year-old Molly Kingsley’s imaginary journeys through space and time. Kingsley’s comic flights take her to the seaside of her youth, an abandoned schoolroom, and even an episode of Star Trek. Once a teacher of chemistry, she amazes her two grandsons when she starts to create entirely new elements. Meanwhile, her daughter Alice is the only one trying to keep her grounded in reality. Wiles’Helium
, which originally opened during the 1990 Spoleto Festival to much acclaim, has been revised after he witnessed dementia firsthand in his family.Helium
has had successful runs in Greenville, and its popularity reaches as far west as Montana. Seasoned Charleston actress Samille Basler stars as Molly Kingsley.
