The heart of this progressive James Island restaurant is a big wood-fired oven and rotisserie grill. It adds a crisp kiss to flatbreads topped with roasted chicken and pecan pesto and a smoky touch to pork chili verde and grilled chicken livers served with bacon ham. The wood-fired vegetable stew, a rich blend of roasted vegetables sprinkled with cool lemon yogurt and almonds, is an outright delight, while rotisserie chicken, grilled pork chops, and hefty burgers round out the flame-centric entrees. Heart’s weekend brunch offers tempting choices like asparagus, shiitake, and goat cheese frittata or crepes topped with cinnamon and sugar, strawberries, maple syrup, and pecans, both toasted in Heart’s wood oven. Creative contemporary dishes cooked on real wood in the heart of James Island: that’s a recipe for a neighborhood favorite. —Robert Moss Dish, Winter 2016
