Halsey wins award for Gil Shuler-designed Aldwyth catalog

Eye See You

Last week, the Halsey Institute received the Mary Ellen LoPresti Award for their exhibition catalog for Aldwyth: work v. / work n. – Collage and Assemblage 1991 – 2009. The exhibit, which was on view Oct. 2009-Jan. 2010, featured a lifetime of work from the reclusive Hilton Head-based artist Aldwyth. Local graphic designer Gil Shuler created the full-color, 112-page catalog, which included more than 40 images of the Aldwyth’s 2- and 3-D works as well as a detailed appendix written by the artist, and essays by Mark Sloan and Rosamond Purcell.

The LoPresti Award is administered by the Southeast Chapter of the Art Libraries Society of North America and is open to art and architecture books, exhibition catalogs, serials, and artist’s books. Earlier this year, the catalog won an honorable mention for best exhibition catalog in the American Association of Museums Publications Design Competition. The Halsey also won a LoPresti in 2007 for Force of Nature: Site Installations by Ten Japanese Artists.
