GrowFood celebrates opening with a warm harvest party

Growers and Showers

City Paper staffers have been excitedly watching construction at the new GrowFood Carolina site, which is located nearly right across the street from our offices on Morrison Drive. It's always fun to have a new neighbor, and this Coastal Conservation League project that connects local farmers with businesses is a welcome addition to the 'hood.

On Saturday night, GrowFood celebrated their opening with a harvest party. The weather was chilly, but we stayed warm in the warehouse thanks to steaming plates of food, drinks from Icebox and Palmetto, and a big, bundled-up crowd. Brannon Florie, the chef from 17 North, provided a huge buffet of Southern specialties sourced from local purveyors, like crispy fried chicken, Happy Cow buttermilk cornbread, Geechie Boy stone-ground grits, and decadent mac 'n' cheese. Guests packed in family-style around a couple of long tables before getting up to listen to bluegrass tunes from the Blue Plantation Band.

Here's hoping GrowFood sticks around NoMo for many years to come, and we won't complain if you decide to throw more parties, either.
