Celeste Albers is not just the Green Grocer, she’s the green goddess of the local food scene. Back when she grew boutique ingredients for guys like Mike Lata and Frank Lee, she was known for the beauty of her vegetables. Lata gets somewhat wistful about it: “Hers were the best vegetables I’d ever seen in my life. She was unbelievable at it.” Today, she sticks to growing potatoes and onions while spending most of her time tending to her raw cow’s milk operation. The chickens and cows feast on perennial pastures of crabgrass, vetch, and ryegrass and munch seasonal plantings of millet, sorghum sudan, and oats. The milk is rich and creamy. She sells raw milk and grass-fed beef every week at the Charleston Farmers Market. Fortunately for the farm, the rain this summer did little damage and they are ready for the fall season. The pork and beef product is used at Ted’s Butcherblock, FIG, and The Glass Onion.
