Sometimes good people make bad choices. That’s the simple truth at the heart of David Lindsay-Abaire’s Good People, which won the 2011 New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play and was nominated for a Tony. The play hinges on Margie, a dollar store cashier in the working-class neighborhood of South Boston, or Southie, who gets fired and turns to a now-wealthy high school boyfriend for help finding a new job, and a ticket out of her paycheck-to-paycheck life. It’s a straightforward request that somehow ends up spiraling out of control. “Everyone in the play would consider themselves a ‘good person,’” says director Rodney Lee Rogers. “Their intentions are always good, but as they brush up against the wants and needs of others, and the harshness of the world, they get twisted and misunderstood.”
