Those weekly thunderstorms may mark summertime for many, but that rain takes a toll on the homes of Chucktown. And if you don’t have enough hours in the day to personally patch the guy next door’s roof, Operation Home’s Gimme Shelter benefit at The Alley can help. Operation Home provides critical home repair and maintenance to elderly, disabled, and disadvantaged residents of the Charleston area. “Last year, volunteers came out and built a ramp in Summerville for a woman in her very late 70s … To get down the stairs, the daughter would carry her mom on her back the way that her mom probably did for her when she was a child,” says Sandy Milliken, Operation Home’s executive director. “It’s the most heart wrenching for us to see an elderly person who just wants to age in peace and their home is becoming unsafe for them to live in.” All proceeds from the benefit’s ticket sales will go to Operation Home, and the ticket costs cover entrance, bowling, games, music, and food from Home Team BBQ. VIPs will have access to an open bar, and a cash bar will provide liquor and beer for all other event-goers. If you’re feeling lucky, spend the $500 on a raffle ticket and see if you score the Scout boat (worth over $27,000) in the raffle drawing. Dikki Du and the Zydeco Krewe will be playing — not surprisingly — zydeco and covering popular tunes throughout the night.
