If you love Cuban cigars, you probably don’t need an excuse to light one up, but we’ve got a good one anyway. The Gimme Shelter event at Eye Level Art has a Cuban theme, and the evening benefits Operation Home, an organization committed to helping low-income Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester county residents repair their homes. There’ll be live music and hand-rolled cigars, and Home Team BBQ will serve Cuban-inspired food including Caribbean black beans, grilled pineapple rice, and smoked jerk-rubbed chicken and pork crafted with rum barbecue sauce by restaurant owner Aaron Siegel. Gimme Shelter highlights Operation’s Home’s focus on the most in-need residents including households with children, older adults, and people with disabilities. The organization’s Executive Director Anna Hamilton is excited for their first spring event. “It’s a young, fun, hip group behind it that cares about the community. That’s what’s so great about the event,” Hamilton says. There’s also a silent auction, artwork from the Charleston Artist Collective, and an open bar with Home Team’s famous Frozen Painkillers. Sounds like the perfect way to wash down the grub.
